This course equips students with fundamental knowledge of igneous and metamorphic petrology, including: concepts, mineral composition, chemical composition, texture, structure; origin and controlling factors affecting the formation process. In addition, the course also provides description about igneous rocks (felsic group, intermediate group, mafic group and ultramafic group); and metamorphic rocks (quarzite, marble, schist, gneiss and amphibolite).

In particular, the course equips skills to identify common igneous and metamorphic rocks through observation and analysis of color, texture and minerals on rock hand samples in the lithology laboratory; as well as identify texuture types, mineral combinations on petrographic thin sections under polarized optical microscope.
