Mechanics is defined as the science that describes and predicts the conditions of rest or motion of bodies under the action of forces. It consists of the mechanics of rigid bodies, mechanics of deformable bodies, and mechanics of fluids. The mechanics of rigid bodies is subdivided into statics and dynamics.
Statics deals with bodies at rest; dynamics deals with bodies in motion.

A primary objective in a first course in mechanics is to help develop a student’s ability first to analyze problems in a simple and logical manner, and then to apply basic principles to their solutions. A strong conceptual understanding of these basic mechanics principles is essential for successfully solving mechanics problems.
